Flipping Disorder: 24 hour animation challenge
I participated in 24 Hour Animation Challenge alongside with three of our Motion Designer friends last October, where we had to create a 30 seconds animation piece to a prompt “Flip Your Perspective.” After 24 hours of raw, chaotic creative explosion, a pink sausage guy with flipping disorder is alive and moving. These collaborative projects made me become sure that I want to tell stories to people and with people.
In collaboration with Abigail Atwell, Kiu Cheung, Lucia Alonso, and Olivia Lin.
We integrated cell hand drawn animation, 2D After Effect Animation, and clay animation.
Voiceover:
Kiu Cheung
Tools:
ProcreateDreams, Procreate, Adobe After Effect, Dragon Frame.
Responsible Aspects:
-
Cell animated character in the beginning using ProcreateDreams.
-
Created illustration assets for motion designer to animate.
-
Collaborated with Kiu to explore and finalize designs.
-
Assisted Lucia and Olivia in the shots where we used clay animation shot on camera.

Cell Animation:
▲ Story animatic by Olivia Lin
▲ Final cell animation by me
▲ Combined with animated assets
Asset animation and compositing by Kiu
Character Exploration:
The goal for character design was clear: simple in design, vibrant color, funny and sad looking.

▲ Eventually went with this pink sausage guy
Style Frame Exploration:

We wanted lots of white negative space and flat perspective.
This was the shot where the character needs to "flip everything around him" when he gets mad.

Final Submission:
The Team!!

It was the most fun, precious and inspiring experience working with talented friends, roommates and thesis partner.
We played multiple roles as animators, motion designers, story artist and visual development artist; also snacked a lot and chugged down gallons of matcha.
