This was inspired by two trips
that happened that summer.
One is my friend Anika Kim’s Taiwan visit; another is my trip to Hong Kong with my personal tour dude Kiu Cheung.“Your color palette looks like Taiwan,” from a visitor's perspective.Anika commented something so intriguing while we were driving to the north, to see where mountains meet the sea; sea crashes into the shore. It stuck in my head.
As for Hong Kong, I was constantly amazed with Hong Kong's streets. Might be political empathy, or Cantonese films in the 90s, or Faye Wong, or that I wrote my extended essay on Elaine Chiu’s paintings.
I only learned to appreciate Taipei after I am not there that often. For the past few years, every stay in Taipei has been my leisures.Being a visitor to a place I referred to as my origin makes me romanticize it too. Or I’m simply being defensive. Some say it looks like Tokyo in the 70s; some say it desperately needs renewing. But it’s pretty because it’s mine.
